Raipur, July 17, 2026: A consumer court in Raipur has directed Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and its dealer Nexa Magnato to either replace a customer's Grand Vitara SUV with an E20-compatible model or refund more than ₹20.5 lakh within 45 days, following a dispute over alleged damage linked to E20 fuel.
The ruling has attracted national attention as India continues expanding the use of E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol.
Court's Decision
The Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ruled in favor of the vehicle owner, Debta, who purchased the Grand Vitara in January 2023. The court held that the manufacturer and dealer failed to adequately inform the customer about the vehicle's compatibility with E20 fuel after E20 became the national fuel standard in April 2026.
The commission ordered the companies to:
- Replace the SUV with an E20-compatible model or
- Refund more than ₹20.5 lakh within 45 days.
- Pay additional compensation for mental distress and litigation expenses.
According to the order, the failure to provide clear information amounted to a deficiency in service under consumer protection laws.
Maruti Suzuki Rejects the Findings
Maruti Suzuki has strongly disputed the consumer court's decision.
The company maintains that the Grand Vitara is fully compatible with E20 fuel and argues that the vehicle's issues were caused by fuel contamination, not ethanol-blended petrol. The automaker has announced that it intends to challenge the order before a higher judicial forum.
