HYDERABAD – In a landmark move for social security, the Telangana government has announced the Indiramma Family Life Insurance Scheme, a universal insurance program that will cover every family in the state. The announcement was a highlight of the ₹3.24 lakh crore state budget for 2026-27, presented by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Friday.
1. Indiramma Family Life Insurance Scheme: Coverage for All
The most significant announcement is the launch of the Indiramma Kutumba Jeevitha Bheema Pathakam.
Universal Coverage: Unlike previous schemes targeted at specific groups, this insurance covers 1.15 crore families irrespective of their economic status—poor, middle class, and rich.
Benefit: A life insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per family.
Launch Date: The scheme is set to officially roll out on June 2, 2026, coinciding with Telangana Formation Day.
Budget Allocation: The government has earmarked ₹4,000 crore for its initial implementation.
Minister Vikramarka emphasized that the goal is to ensure no child or family in Telangana faces financial ruin following the sudden loss of an earning member.
2. Unprecedented Safety Net for Government Employees
The 2026 budget also introduced a "first-of-its-kind" comprehensive insurance package for the state’s 7.57 lakh government employees and pensioners.
Accident Insurance: Coverage of ₹1.20 crore in the event of accidental death.
Air Accident Cover: An additional ₹2 crore for deaths occurring in air accidents.
Term Life Insurance: ₹10 lakh coverage for employees up to 60 years of age.
Cashless Health Security: Implemented through the Rajiv Aarogyasri Trust, this scheme provides cashless treatment for 1,998 diseases across government and 421 empanelled private hospitals, benefiting roughly 23.51 lakh people (including dependents).
3. Other Key Welfare Highlights
Beyond insurance, the 2026-27 budget introduced several initiatives aimed at education and student welfare:
Student Breakfast Scheme: Nutritious breakfast (including milk and ragi malt) for students from pre-primary to Intermediate levels.
Telangana Public Schools: Select schools will be upgraded with modern digital infrastructure and transport facilities.
Anganwadi Benefits: Retirement benefits of ₹2 lakh for Anganwadi teachers and ₹1 lakh for helpers.
Analysis for Aspirants
For those preparing for competitive exams like UPSC or GPSC, these schemes reflect the state’s shift toward Universal Social Security models. The move to decouple insurance eligibility from income status is a notable policy trend in 2026, aiming to reduce the administrative hurdles of "targeting" and ensuring a broader safety net.
