NEW DELHI – To honor the 95th martyrdom anniversary of India’s iconic revolutionaries—Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar—the Government of India has announced a massive youth-led initiative titled the "Shaheed Diwas Padyatra 2026." Organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) platform, the march aims to bridge the gap between historical remembrance and modern civic duty.
"MY Bharat, My Responsibility": Transforming Tribute into Action
The 2026 celebrations are centered around the theme “MY Bharat, My Responsibility.” Unlike traditional ceremonies that focus solely on floral tributes, this year’s Padyatra is designed to channel the idealism of the youth toward active nation-building.
Across all 763 districts of India, thousands of volunteers will march to promote:
Civic Responsibility: Encouraging youth to take ownership of local community issues.
Volunteerism: Strengthening the spirit of "Seva" (service) as exemplified by the martyrs.
National Unity: Creating a visible, unified message of patriotism across diverse regions.
Faridabad to Host Central National Event
While marches will take place in every district, the central national-level Padyatra will be held in Faridabad, Haryana.
The event is expected to see a turnout of over 10,000 young participants. Key dignitaries, including Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Smt. Raksha Khadse, and Haryana Sports Minister, Shri Gaurav Gautam, are scheduled to lead the march. The Faridabad route will commence from K.L. Mehta Dayanand College and culminate at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk, covering significant landmarks to engage the local public.
Related Commemorative Activities
The Padyatra is the culmination of a week-long series of events, including:
MY Bharat Civic Sense Challenge: A nationwide Shramdaan (labor contribution) drive involving cleanliness and road safety awareness.
Digital Engagement: National-level quizzes on "Unsung Heroes" and the "Ek Yuva Aisa Bhi" reel competition to showcase youth leadership.
The Pledge Wall: Participants across the country will sign a "Pledge Wall," committing to their roles in India’s growth story.
Historical Significance of March 23
Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day) is observed every year on March 23 to commemorate the day in 1931 when Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were executed in Lahore Jail. Their sacrifice remains a cornerstone of the Indian independence movement, symbolizing the "Inquilab" (revolution) that eventually led to freedom in 1947.
"The sacrifice of our young freedom fighters is not just a chapter in history; it is a living inspiration for the youth of 2026 to build a 'Viksit Bharat'." — Ministry of Youth Affairs Official Statement.
