India AI Impact Summit: The Global South's First Home Game
The India-AI Impact Summit 2026 was held in New Delhi, marking the first time the Global South hosted a global AI summit. The five-day event drew participation from over 100 countries, with more than 200,000 online registrations and attendance from world leaders across 20 nations, along with senior officials from international organizations including the UN Secretary-General.

Key outcomes included a summit declaration endorsed by 92 countries, the launch of a Global AI Impact Commons with over 80 impact stories from more than 30 countries, and investment commitments exceeding $250 billion across the AI value chain.
Microsoft MAI: Seven New Models Target Vertical Tracks
On the corporate side, Microsoft announced seven new AI models under its Microsoft AI (MAI) division at Build 2026, marking a significant expansion into reasoning, coding, and healthcare AI. This represented a concentrated showcase of Microsoft's self-developed AI capabilities, aimed at reducing reliance on a single external partner and building a more complete technology stack for the enterprise AI market.
The flagship announcement was MAI-Thinking-1, Microsoft's first dedicated reasoning model. According to Microsoft, it features approximately 35 billion active parameters and supports a 128K context window. The company claims it was trained entirely from scratch on clean, commercially licensed enterprise-grade data without distillation from rival AI models. Microsoft reported that blind human raters preferred MAI-Thinking-1 over Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6, and that it matched Claude Opus 4.6 on the SWE-bench Pro coding benchmark — though these results come from Microsoft's own evaluations and await outside testing.
Other models in the MAI family include:

India Domestic Politics: West Bengal Shake-Up
The West Bengal Assembly election results were announced in early May, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing a landslide victory. The BJP claimed 207 of 294 seats, marking its first electoral win in the largely Bengali-speaking state of over 100 million people. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had governed since 2011, fell to just 80 seats.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign, alleging that "votes were looted by force and the entire voting process was manipulated." Governor R.N.
