Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis sparked a political controversy after using the slang phrase "bhade ke tatte" during a debate in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly while defending the state's ambitious ₹6,700-crore Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link project.
The remarks came in response to criticism following a landslide near Tunnel 2 on July 6, triggered by intense monsoon rainfall. The landslide damaged a retaining wall and temporarily disrupted traffic, raising concerns on social media about the quality and safety of the newly developed infrastructure.
Addressing the Assembly, Fadnavis described the Missing Link as an "engineering marvel", emphasizing that the landslide did not damage the tunnel or the primary structure. According to the Chief Minister, only a protective wall was affected due to exceptionally heavy rainfall, and restoration work was completed swiftly, allowing traffic to resume within 18 hours.
While defending the project, Fadnavis accused some social media users of deliberately spreading misinformation. Referring to individuals who he alleged were posting misleading content about the project, he used the term "bhade ke tatte", a slang expression implying people acting as paid agents or hired propagandists. He argued that such posts were aimed at undermining public confidence in a major infrastructure project rather than presenting genuine safety concerns.
The Chief Minister maintained that the government's engineering teams responded quickly and effectively to the incident, demonstrating the resilience of the project even under extreme monsoon conditions. He reiterated that the Missing Link remains one of Maharashtra's most significant infrastructure developments and is designed to improve travel time and safety on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
However, the choice of words drew criticism from opposition leaders and several social media users, who argued that the language was inappropriate for the Assembly and appeared dismissive of citizens who had raised legitimate questions about public safety. Critics said elected representatives should respond to concerns with transparency rather than personal attacks.
Supporters of the Chief Minister defended his remarks, arguing that he was reacting to what he viewed as an orchestrated campaign to discredit the project despite the rapid restoration of traffic and the absence of major structural damage. They praised the administration's quick response during a challenging monsoon season that has affected several parts of Maharashtra.
The Missing Link project, valued at approximately ₹6,700 crore, is one of the state's flagship highway initiatives. It includes a series of tunnels and bridges intended to bypass the accident-prone ghat section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, reducing travel time while improving road safety.
The incident has now generated both engineering and political debate, with attention focused not only on the project's resilience during extreme weather but also on the tone of political discourse in the state's legislature.
