ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia football program is once again under scrutiny following the arrests of two defensive players late Wednesday night, February 18, 2026. Linebackers Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon were taken into custody by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department on misdemeanor charges related to high-speed driving.
According to police records, both players were clocked traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph on the Outer Loop near Olympic Drive. While the incidents appeared to involve separate vehicles, they occurred within minutes of each other.
The Charges and Arrest Details
Both players were booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail and released shortly after on cash bonds.
| Player | Charges | Bond Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Chris Cole (Junior) | Reckless Driving, Speeding (Maximum Limits) | $26 |
| Darren Ikinnagbon (Sophomore) | Reckless Driving, Speeding (Maximum Limits), Following Too Closely | $39 |
Player Remorse and Official Response
On Thursday afternoon, both athletes issued public apologies via social media. Cole, a key starter who recorded 59 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season, expressed regret for the "negative attention" brought to the program.
"I recognize the seriousness of this matter and the responsibility that comes with representing the University of Georgia," Cole wrote. "I am focused on making better decisions and learning from every experience."
Ikinnagbon shared a similar sentiment, stating his actions "fell short of the standards expected" of a Georgia student-athlete.
The University of Georgia Athletic Department issued a brief statement on Thursday morning: "We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time."
A Troubling Pattern in Athens
These arrests mark the latest in a long string of driving-related offenses that have plagued the Bulldogs since the January 2023 crash that claimed the lives of staffer Chandler LeCroy and player Devin Willock.
Since that tragedy, more than 30 players or staff members have been cited or arrested for traffic violations, including racing, reckless driving, and DUIs. Head coach Kirby Smart has faced mounting criticism over his disciplinary approach.
Last season, the program dismissed offensive lineman Nyier Daniels following a high-speed police chase, signaling a potential shift toward a "zero-tolerance" policy. Whether Cole and Ikinnagbon will face similar dismissal remains to be seen as spring practice approaches next month.
